Tunes, Tunes and More Tunes!

It's been a really long time since I've posted any music downloads, but over the last few weeks I've gotten a few new albums that I've really been enjoying. So give them a listen...

Serj Tankian - Elect the Dead (and the Bonus CD) It's the solo album from System of a Down's singer and as you could imagine, it sounds like a System of a Down album - heavy, melodic and political.

Ween - La Cucaracha (and the Friends EP) Sometimes Ween puts out an album that hits me instantly, like Quebec. And sometimes they put one out that needs some time to grow on me. I think that this one is going to need to grow on me.

Radiohead - In Rainbows Like the new Ween album, this one takes a few listens to really grow on you, but once it does it's great. If you like it and want to support the band, visit the official site and pay them whatever you like for the album.

Remember, bands make most of their money from live performance rather than album sales, so while buying albums from the bands who you love and support is a good thing, seeing them live and buying their t-shirts is even better.

New Unreleased White Stripes!

Apparently some DJ got her hands on an advanced copy of the upcoming White Stripes album, The Icky Thump. She aired the whole thing and it's been spreading. The only torrent I could find was on Demonoid. Here it is.

Modest Mouse

When I first heard that Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr had joined Modest Mouse, I couldn't wait to get their new album. Then I forgot about it for a while and when I remembered last week, the album had been our for more than a month. I've only heard the first few songs so far, but judging by them I can tell that this is a great album. We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank. If you want to hear more, there's the full discography, of if you just want a smaller taste before delving into the whole thing, I really like The Moon and Antarctica and The Lonesome Crowded West.

And if you want to hear more Johnny Marr, there's the full Smiths discography, Electronic (Johnny with Bernard Sumner from New Order and Neil Tennent from Pet Shop Boys), and The The (of whom I can't find a decent torrent).

New Nick Cave!

Nick Cave is back with a new band, a new album and a new mustache. The new band is called Grinderman and it's some of the harder edged stuff that he's done in years. Give it a listen. And check out the video for No Pussy Blues:

"This music will change your life"

That's what Natalie Portman's character said about The Shins in Garden State. I can't guarantee that listening to The Shins will change your life, but if you like great indie pop, then you should definitely give them a listen.

A Twisted Christmas

I heard some clips of this on Howard today. Twisted Sister did a Christmas album, and it's just as silly as you would think something like that would be. Just picture "Oh Come All Ye Faithful" to the tune of "We're Not Gonna Take it" and you get the idea. Here's the track listing:
01. Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas
02. Oh Come All Ye Faithful
03. White Christmas
04. I'll Be Home For Christmas (feat. Lita Ford)
05. Silver Bells
06. I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Clause
07. Let It Snow
08. Deck the Halls
09. The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire)
10. Heavy Metal Christmas (The Twelve Days of Christmas)
11. Bonus Track

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds

I've only just recently gotten into Nick Cave, though I've been aware of him for years. He played at Lollapalooza 94 but I sat out his set because it was raining and I didn't really know anything about his music. I'm not even really sure how to describe his music other than hauntingly beautiful, somewhat dark, and just really really good. The best torrent I can find is really big. It's a gig and a half, but it's his entire discography. You might as well download it since once you listen to some of it, you're going to want to hear the rest anyway. But if you want to just sample a little bit at a time, here are a few of my favorite albums: Let Love In, Tender Prey, Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus.

GWAR!!!

Gwar are the greatest theatrical satirical metal band in the whole universe. How they are able to play instruments in those costumes is beyond me, but not only do they play tightly, they manage to cover the audience in stage blood, guts, unidentified sticky stuff and other assorted colored fluids. While I've heard that they were once a bunch of art students from Richmond, Virginia, here's their official story:

The Legend of GWAR began millions of years ago when the aliens rampaged across the galaxy with a gang of space pirates called the Scumdogs of the Universe. Falling out of favor with their Master, GWAR was imprisoned on the most remote mudball planet in the galaxy...Earth. After killing off the dinosaurs and inadvertently creating the human species by raping prehistoric apes, GWAR began to significantly influence the development of the planet, until that wild gig in Atlantis, when it was decided that GWAR should be entombed in Antarctica. Thus, preventing them from screwing up Earth any further. Several thousand years later GWAR were stumbled upon and awakened by, Sleazy P. Martini, a known pimp, pusher, pornographer, and record executive for Capitalist Records, accidentally stumbled into GWAR's Antarctic tomb and woke them. He took them to New York, gave them electric guitars, and began to market them as his latest Rock-n-Roll sensation. Some of GWAR's adventures are chronicled in their albums, comics, and videos, but there are still plenty of GWAR stories waiting to be told. Now the only way to truly validate your life before death is to join the masses of "lowly zit-ridden scum of outcast prepubescence" when GWAR comes to ravish and bloody your mutant town.

Here's a big (770mb) torrent with most of their albums.

it's Tenacious D time!

The D are back with a movie and album coming out very soon. If you don't know who Tenacious D are, have you been living in a cave for the last 10 years or something? Tenacious D are the greatest acoustic metal band ever, featuring Jack Black and Kyle Gass. The theme song for their new movie, The Pick of Destiny, is up and available and you really ought to check it out. And if you haven't heard their first album, check that out too. And check out the official movie website too.

The Killers Channel The Boss

I haven't heard all of Sam's Town, the new Killers album, but I have heard the first single, When You Were Young (video), and the critics aren't joking when they say it's extremely Springsteen-esque, both lyrically and melodically, while still keeping a modern rock sound. I liked their last album, Hot Fuss, so I think I'll be checking this one out too.

Viva la Beck!

I knew that Beck was putting out a new album sometime soon, but I didn't realize it was already out until I saw it in a Starbucks this weekend. Please don't hold that against Beck (or me). It's called The Information, and I've listened to a few songs and it sounds pretty good. The reviews are mixed, but the good ones are saying that it's the best since Odelay. It's produced by Nigel Godrich, who previously has only produced his more stripped down albums like Sea Change and Mutations, but this is more of a rock album and it definitely works. My personal favorite is Midnight Vultures.

Lots and lots and lots of Ween

Ween are one of those bands with an incredibly rabid, obsessive and creative fanbase. They actively encourage audience taping and trading. I first bought a CD burner almost 10 years ago just to get into trading Ween bootlegs, and I've made some great friends through internet Ween fandom. Browntracker (reg req) is a Ween torrent site where you can find both audio and video. Most of the audio is in lossless formats, so you'll need a decoder for flac or shn files to burn them straight to CD or encode them to MP3.

I Heart Yo La Tengo

The best thing to come out of Hoboken, NJ since Frank Sinatra, this trio goes from soft poppy diddies to blistering noise rock sonic wallpaper and everywhere in between. Their new album I Am Not Affraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass is being hailed as a return to their prime after a couple of mildly disappointing albums. And for those who need to catch up on the last 20 years of Yo La Tengo, there's the 3 disc retrospective, Prisoners of Love.
