Happy Birthday Hank!
![]()
Today is Henry Rollins’ birthday, so here’s a full Black Flag concert from 1984, professionally shot in their prime!
Wild Flag – See No Evil

Thirty five years ago today, one of my favorite albums was released. That album is Marquee Moon by Television. They were part of the mid 70′s New York City punk rock scene that grew around CBGB’s with the likes of Patti Smith, Blondie, the Ramones and the Talking Heads. I’ve already posted the epic title track, and I wanted to post my second favorite. When I was searching for it, I found a cover by Wild Flag, a supergroup featuring members of Sleater-Kinney and Helium. Carrie Brownstein (who a whole lot more people now know from Portlandia) and Mary Timoney really nail the signature dual guitar stylings of Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd.
Pixies – Gigantic

This one goes out to the NY Giants. This song is not about them, or football. But the name fits and it rocks. So have at it.
SST: The Tour
One of the most badass record labels back in the 80′s was SST, run by Black Flag’s Greg Ginn. So many great bands were on that label, and they also put out a couple of incredible compilations called “The Blasting Concept” which turned me on to a bunch of these bands. Apparently a bunch of these bands toured together in 1985, and here’s a video of one of those shows featuring Husker Du, The Minutemen, Meat Puppets, Saccharin Trust and SWA.
D.O.A. – General Strike
Today is a general strike in Oakland! Tens of thousands of people will be in this city marching peacefully against a version of capitalism that has miserably failed the vast majority of this country. This video puts the music of legendary Canadian punks D.O.A. to footage of people protesting against the war on working people, mostly in Wisconsin. The revolution is finally here! We are the 99%! SHUT IT ALL DOWN!!!
