    God's Will?

There's nothing that the republican crowd wants more than keeping people focused on Obama's former pastor Jeremiah Wright. And who can blame them? The dude said some really offensive things that sound even worse when taken out of context. And when somebody close to a candidate does something that might be considered offensive, it's like a dream come true to the opposition. I'm sure when Obama gets the highly coveted Flavor Flav endorsement, we'll be hearing that crowd spewing out lyrics from Fear of a Black Planet.

Yet in the meantime, John McCain has been sucking up to the lunatic fringe of the religious right, actively seeking their endorsements since he doesn't have the kind of fundy cred that Mike Huckabee has. As far as I know, he actually believes in the theory of evolution, and science that kind of kooky liberal nonsense will certainly not fly with that crowd. The kinds of crazy shit these people spew on a daily basis makes Wright look like Ward freakin' Cleaver, yet the press barely picks up on it and the right keep on making excuses how their wackos are more acceptable than our wackos. But the latest thing to come out of John Hagee's mouth will hopefully be the last nail on the coffin of this ridiculous guilt by association game. Because it's one thing to blame natural disasters on the gays, but it's another to say that Hitler was fulfilling God's will by exterminating millions of Jews. "Oh no he didn't," you shout. But oh yes he sure did.
Going in and out of biblical verse, Hagee preached: "'And they the hunters should hunt them,' that will be the Jews. 'From every mountain and from every hill and from out of the holes of the rocks.' If that doesn't describe what Hitler did in the holocaust you can't see that."

He goes on: "Theodore Hertzel is the father of Zionism. He was a Jew who at the turn of the 19th century said, this land is our land, God wants us to live there. So he went to the Jews of Europe and said 'I want you to come and join me in the land of Israel.' So few went that Hertzel went into depression. Those who came founded Israel; those who did not went through the hell of the holocaust.

"Then god sent a hunter. A hunter is someone with a gun and he forces you. Hitler was a hunter. And the Bible says—Jeremiah writing—'They shall hunt them from every mountain and from every hill and from the holes of the rocks,' meaning there's no place to hide. And that might be offensive to some people but don't let your heart be offended. I didn't write it, Jeremiah wrote it. It was the truth and it is the truth. How did it happen? Because God allowed it to happen. Why did it happen? Because God said my top priority for the Jewish people is to get them to come back to the land of Israel."

I'm sure it will give great comfort to people whose relatives died in those gas chambers that it was all just part of the plan to bring about an end of the world scenario where they get to go directly to hell without passing Go and collecting $200. Hagee is a Christian Zionist. He supports Israel not so much because he has any great kindness for the folks who he blames for killing Jesus, but because in order for the apocalypse to happen, the Jews need to control the holy land. And anything to hurry that scenario along, whether it be shooting at rock throwing kids, collective punishment of families, or the attempted fucking genocide of a whole race of people is all part of this wackjob's God's great plan to pick up him and his followers in a giant cross shaped UFO and bring them to the great big Stryper concert in the sky.

So, let's refresh... On one hand you've got a pastor who sounds like a Public Enemy album. On the other, you've got a guy saying that the Holocaust was all part of God's great plan to end the world so only the people who believe in one particular interpretation of an ancient book of mythology get to have themselves a private party while laughing and saying "I told you so" at all the people who thought they were just a bunch of nutjobs.

I challenge anyone to try making excuses for John McCain not publicly bitchslapping this raving loon and telling him not to come within a hundred feet of his campaign. Or better yet, you guys shut up about Wright and we'll shut up about this guy and perhaps we can all focus on the issues that actually effect our lives instead.

UPDATE: Hagee kicked to the curb!

    Jason,

"...you guys shut up about Wright and we'll shut up about this guy and perhaps we can all focus on the issues that actually effect our lives instead"

I'll second that motion. But that means "Guilt by Association" is off the table for campaign tactics from 2008 forward. Can your side do that?

    Blogger Jason said ... (5/24/08 8:05 AM) :

I don't speak for my whole side, JSF. Could you answer for yours? I just want consistency. If the guilt by association game is played, the rules need to be applied evenly to both sides.

I'm far more interested to hear your excuses for what this guy said. I know you don't care just how crazy supporters of Israel are or what their underlying motivations are just so long as they support Israel. Now would be a golden opportunity for you to take an actual stand instead of the usual disappointing partisan game playing. What say ye?

    Blogger JSF said ... (5/24/08 8:54 AM) :

    Jason,

What he said was disgusting; In fact I'm condeming it.

But this "Guilt by Association" thing was first put in play since Watergate against our side. Like the Ad Hom rhetoric against the GOP that's always used (which begat Senator Clinton's statements re:RFK and Obama), if you don't want it used, don't do it.

    Blogger Jason said ... (5/24/08 12:24 PM) :

JSF, bravo on Hagee! You manage to surprise me every now and then. Would you go as far as saying that Israel does not need friends like that, or are you going to try to have your cake and eat it too on this one? Come on, buddy, make me proud!

As for the guilt by association thing, rather than agreeing with you that it's wrong and nobody should do it (which I would be inclined to do), I'm going to play your kind of partisan games with you about it. I will only advocate stopping it from the left once the right stops doing it.

    Kind of lame, huh?

    Blogger Malcot Israel said ... (5/25/08 3:55 PM) :

You two remind me of Arabs and Israelis, you'll call a truce when the other one does, this means that a truce will NEVER occur because no one will ever be first. Can't we all just get along?

    Blogger Jason said ... (5/25/08 8:11 PM) :

I enjoy busting JSF's balls, not for what he believes, but for the way he puts aside what he knows is right and instead plays these silly partisan gotcha games. It makes me want to pull the hair out of my head!

    Blogger Malcot Israel said ... (5/26/08 9:50 AM) :

Yes I know, I think you guys invented a new form of male bonding and are much more alike than you'd like to admit :)

    Blogger Jason said ... (5/26/08 7:11 PM) :

Oh, I'll admit it! If we didn't like each other on a personal level and enjoy our silly sparring, it could get ugly.

    Blogger Malcot Israel said ... (5/27/08 10:03 AM) :

I have no doubts. I have seen how ugly he can get when he wants. He can be a real tyrant sometimes. I can't complain much though I can also be a tyrant when I want to be. I think I get that from him!

    Blogger Lord Nazh said ... (5/27/08 1:45 PM) :

    "I just want consistency."

You mean like how Hagee has been McCain's pastor for the past 20 years or so? How Hagee married McCain and his wife, baptized the children and his been his spiritual mentor..

    oh, that wasn't Hagee?

    Blogger Jason said ... (5/27/08 2:09 PM) :

Lord, an endorsement is an endorsement. Is that really the best you can come up with? McCain sought out a whole bunch of these evangelical nutjobs and asked for their endorsements. He has researchers who could have vetted them. But better yet, let's skip all this bullshit and focus on real issues that actually matter to Americans. Does what some wingnut preacher say actually effect you personally? I think not.

    Blogger Lord Nazh said ... (5/27/08 3:37 PM) :

"Does what some wingnut preacher say actually effect you personally?"

Has nothing to do with how it affects me :) it was your post, not mine.

There is a big difference (at least to me) in an endorsement and 20 years of listening to 'wingnut preachers' and continuing to support said preacher. Going so far as to say he can't condemn Wright until it was politically impossible not to.

We can talk policy all day, I was just responding to the post though ;)

    Blogger Jason said ... (5/27/08 4:13 PM) :

I think you miss my point. Both of these are meaningless non-issues. People say offensive stuff all the time. The differences are meaningless as the whole thing is meaningless. But if people insist on playing these ridiculous games of gotcha, I say let's see a split screen with Wright on one side and Hagee on the other. Better yet, have one TV special that covers each and every asshat who the candidates know or has endorsed them, let them rant and rave like idiots for an hour, and then be done with the whole trashy affair. Perhaps Jerry Springer could moderate it.

    Blogger Lord Nazh said ... (5/27/08 9:04 PM) :

Everything in this election that has hurt Obama has been a 'non-issue'; no matter what it was.

You continue to equate an endorsement (since repudiated) to a 20-year relationship (kind of repudiated). While both pastors are idiots, only one was an actual pastor to one of the people we are talking about. What you choose to do for 20 years of your life (marriage, baptism, your donations) says a lot about what kind of person you are. Who endorses you only says that if you let it.

But I do like the JS moderating bit :)

    Blogger Lord Nazh said ... (5/27/08 9:05 PM) :

"that covers each and every asshat who the candidates know"

I guess that's to cover Ayers and Rezko? :)

    Blogger Jason said ... (5/28/08 9:56 AM) :

Lordy Lordy Lordy, only if you can pick an asshat or two from your own side.
