This Time it's Personal
| Anyone who reads this blog knows that loathing does not even begin to describe the way I feel for the don of the Bush/Cheney Crime Family. Up until now, the reasons for my unhappiness with this miserable excuse for a president have been on principle. The things he has done have been bad for our country and our democracy, but really have not personally affected me, until now. You don't have to see Sicko to know that health care in this country is in bad shape. When we first found out that Anne was pregnant, we had to scramble to get her insured. Private insurance was out because pregnancy is definitely a pre-existing condition. Medicare was out because we made too much. Luckily for us there was a state program for medium income people who can't afford private insurance, because if that hadn't been available, our options were abortion or bankruptcy. Since we were accepted into that program, Stella became eligible for low cost insurance until she turns 18. If not for this, we could not afford to insure her at all. The federal program that funds the states low cost insurance for children is up for renewal and guess what president shit for brains says he's going to do? He's promised to veto it. Though around nine million kids still need health insurance, Bush portrayed the proposed expansion -- which would be funded by a 61-cent tax on cigarette packs -- as a trick that would let middle-class families ditch private insurers in favor of government care, ushering in a dangerous age of universal care.Yeah George, that's it. Instead of choosing between health care or food, I'm tricking the system! And I wonder who is greasing George's palms more, the tobacco lobby or the insurance lobby. This could very well lead to the first bipartisan veto override for Bush. At this point, the lame duck president has nothing to lose by screwing over children, but any member of congress who goes along with that can pretty much kiss their seats goodbye. Regardless, we need to put the pressure on, so please call your senators and representatives, especially if they are republican, and put their feet to the fire on this one. If you don't have any kids of your own, do it for Stella: Labels: rant, worst administration ever |

post a commentCute kid. You should be proud.
If only the American people had a lobby as powerful as some of these industries.
Thanks. I am incredibly proud. The people, if they would get their fat asses off their couches and into the streets, would be a far more powerful lobby than any of these corporate bloodsuckers.
What a darling little girl! I may be wrong but as my friend Tricia states on her site "Don't call me call me Republican and don't call me a Democrate". Both parties have failed us. Each is so hell bent on destroying the other I want to fire most of them! That's all they do. Pardoning Libby was a shame. Building a Levy in New Orleans to pre hurricane 1960's levels wasn't too smart either, especially since we sent 2 representatives to The Netherlands to see the best Levy in the world. To hell with them all and their bad decision making. I'm beholden to no one. Same with stem-cell research. Christpher Reeve showed us how to resolve the moral and ethical considerations in his last book in 1 paragraph. But everyone against it (including actress Patricia Heaton from my neckof the woods)keeps spouting off with misinformation like a broken record. I'd sit down with most anyone and debate this. But will they even listen? Great post Jason! Very thought-provoking!!
Stella...A beautiful name, for a beautiful child!
I agree completely. Fortunately, I work for a large corporation that has excellent insurance coverage. However, both of my brothers are entrepeneurs and pay BIG BUCKS for coverage. Incidentally they both have rather large families...one with three kids and one with four..I know...OUCH!
I'm here via your dad's blog, which by the way looks great! The only problem was I couldn't leave a comment...Something about not being able to find the URL...or something.
Michael, I tend to agree with your friend Tricia. I hate politicians, and it's just a matter of who I hate a little less.
Jenni, thanks. My dad's comments are working again. Debugging is my least favorite part of doing a re-design, and now that I've given his site a facelift I'm considering going through all of that again here.
Unfortunately there are people out there that do defraud the insurance systems in place, same with unemployment and so on and so forth.
Now getting rid of the insurance all together would be ridiculous because of the many out there that need it.
My brother came home from Iraq and has been having a tough time finding work. He is so far in debt he can hardly tred water, but he is managing and is too proud to go on unemployment. I begged him to take advantage of the system, that way, atleast I knew my tax dollars were going to one person who really needed it.
There is no doubt this country needs healtcare reform. I wasn't too opposed to Clinton's plan when he was in office.
I think Bush is taking the veto thing too far. It's as if he doesn't care about the process anymore, he says I gotta veto I'm gonna use it.
This is one Republican that will be ever so happy to see him go.
PS....your daughter is beautiful. I am expecting my first daughter (2nd) child in 21 days. Healthcare is a bitch for us, but there is nothing we can do but pay it.
Ellie, you want to hear about some fraud? This makes my blood boil. Our OBGYN practice tried to milk an extra $6k out of our insurance by submitting an extra bill a year and a half after my wife gave birth. We got a letter from the insurance company telling us that they got this bill and refused to pay it so we might expect it to come to us. It never did. Anybody gaming the system needs to be punished severely in order to keep it working for those who need it.
There is something that you can do besides just paying it. You can get active on the issue. You can not vote for people who are against universal affordable health care. You can make your voice heard.
It looks like you are due pretty soon. Good luck! It's great having a daughter, though yours is in for it having a big brother! I know, I was one.
What annoys me is...the people with insurance have a lower bill with the doctors b/c the doctors have an agreement with the insurance companies.... a negotiated price.
But if you don't have insurance, you don't have a negotiated price, it is probably 2/3rds higher than the insurance companies negotiated price. So not only do you not have the benefit of insurance, but you are penalized for it.
We are due August 16th; planned birth for high risk. I am counting down!
I am really enjoying your blog by the way.
Thanks Ellie. After your birth, let's share our birthing war stories. We've got a doozy that I don't think you need to be hearing less than a month out. Obviously there's a wonderful end result, but she sure didn't come easy.
I haven't read much of your blog, but I like what I saw and I'll try to make it over more often.
My guess is the tobacco companies lobbyists. Hands down. I'm assuming you live where, NY or Washington DC? I work for a major health insurer (non-profit) and our private health insurance does cover those who are pregnant. I'm not huge on the insurance rules and regulations by state...but wouldn't be surprised if they differed.
I agree that this health care system sucks, but it's not all bad. I haven't seen Sicko yet, who knows if I will, but it takes the major aim at for-profit insurance companies and their practices to swindle. Should be interesting.
We're in California by way of DC, and I'm originally a NYer. Many insurance companies will not cover pregnancy, while in France they send you home with a health care aid who helps out with household chores as the new parents start bonding with their new baby. If that level of care is not worth high taxes, I don't know what is.
Pardoning Libby was a shame
Not nearly so shameful as the Clintons standing nearby like the cats that swallowed the canary calling it a shame. Clinton's pardons leave Libby's pardon for dead.
Oh Aurora, so good of you to drop by. Perhaps you'll be so kind as to answer a few questions for me. These are a bit off the given topic, but since you decided to use this thread about George Bush personally trying to take affordable health care away from my daughter to bash Bill Clinton, the can is open and worms are flying everywhere. Answer these or this will be your first and last comment here.
1) Why is it that you right wing types can't actually defend Bush's actions without bringing up Bill Clinton?
2) Do two wrongs somehow make a right?
3) You're not even an American. Is your support of the American neoconservative movement based on anything besides the belief that their unwavering support of Israel will help bring about a mythological apocalypse?
4) Here's one you dodged on JSF's blog... as a Christian Zionist, what do you think happens to people who do not accept Jesus Christ as their personal savior after death?
She's a DOLL!
Have you heard of MomsRising.org? They fight this stuff all the time. They are all about providing every child with health insurance, child care, etc. Check them out if you've got a minute.
